January 11, 2012Compliance officers with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) conducted slightly fewer inspections in fiscal year 2011 than in 2010, partly because the agency is putting more time into certain types of inspections that take longer. At the same time, however, a new penalty structure has resulted in a doubling of average proposed penalties for serious
violations, from $1,053 to $2,132. OSHA cited the need to maximize the impact of penalties as a deterrent against safety and health violations. 01.11.2012
